EDI X12 · Windows desktop software

EDI 835 & 837 to SQL Server, MySQL & PostgreSQL

Load X12 remittance and claim files into relational tables without writing a parser. Universal File Converter detects the transaction type, reads the delimiters from the ISA envelope, and loads each segment type into its own SQL table. It runs on your Windows PC; no cloud service is involved.

How it works

From an EDI file to SQL tables in one pass

X12 files are segment-and-element delimited and hierarchical: one 837 claim can carry many service lines, so the data does not fit one flat table. Universal File Converter handles that for you in its EDI & COBOL Conversion window.

1

Choose the file

Open the EDI & COBOL Conversion window and select your EDI file.

2

Type is detected

The transaction type (835, 837 and others below) is detected, and delimiters are auto-detected from the ISA envelope. Nothing to configure by hand.

3

Pick a destination

Choose SQL Server, MySQL or PostgreSQL, or write a flat segment file instead.

4

Convert

Each segment type is loaded into its own SQL table in a single step.

Supported transactions

Ready-made table layouts for the common X12 sets

Table layouts are included for these transaction sets. The layouts are standard .cfg files, so you can extend them with the extra segments your trading partners send.

Example: 835 and 837 starter layouts

837SV1ServicesProcedure code, charge amount, unit basis, units
837HIDiagnosesUp to 4 composite diagnosis codes
837NM1NamesEntity type, qualifier, name, ID qualifier and code
Honest limits: the starter layouts are starting points, not a claim of full compliance. Real trading-partner files often carry more segments (REF, DTM, N1, PLB and others), which you add as extra route entries in the same .cfg format. This is not a certified EDI translator; validate any production deployment against your trading partner's companion guide first.

Also included

Check, acknowledge and rebuild

EDI check

Check an EDI file before you load it, so a bad envelope or segment count shows up early.

997 / 999 acknowledgments

Acknowledgment tools are built into the same window.

Rebuild

Rebuild tools are included alongside the check and acknowledgment functions.

COBOL copybook import

Mainframe extracts too? Point the app at a .cpy, .cbl or .cob file and it builds the field layout from the PIC clauses. See EDI & COBOL details.

Questions

EDI to SQL: common questions

Do I have to write a parser or script?

No. Choose the file and a destination. The transaction type and delimiters are detected for you, and each segment type goes to its own table.

Which databases can it load into?

SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL, or a flat segment file. The matching ODBC driver must be installed on your PC for MySQL and PostgreSQL; SQL Server uses ODBC Driver 17 or later.

Is it a certified EDI translator?

No. It is a data conversion tool that flattens X12 into relational tables. It has been verified against sample files, not the full ANSI X12 5010 implementation guides, so validate against your trading partner's companion guide before relying on it in production.

Can I add segments that are not in the starter layouts?

Yes. The layouts are standard .cfg files that you can extend with additional segments and destination tables.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Universal File Converter is a native Windows desktop application (Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit). Files are processed on your own computer; no browser or cloud service is required.

Can I try it first?

Yes. The free trial lasts 14 days with no credit card. It is the Standard edition, limited to 20 conversions of the first 500 records each, and it can be used once. Purchases carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.
